Search Engine Rankings Still Depend On Links
December 22, 2008 at 1:51 pm | Posted in SEO, search engines | Leave a CommentTags: links, search engines, SEO
The Google Page Rank tool can gauge the popularity of your pages, but is not a comprehensive mirror of link popularity. Firstly it’s worth noting that Google only updates the page rank every 3 or 4 months.

Therefore if your pages are not yet ranked, the fault may lies with google and not your popularity. Furthermore, a PR 0 doesn’t mean that your website is useless. It may mean it is awaiting a meaningful score once Google has had time to monitor and ascertain how your site measure up.
We are all interested in Google because they bring the most potential traffic. Many Webmasters have built up inbound links with only this one this search engine in mind. Gaining links to a website is a good idea regardless of any search engine algorithm.
The old fashioned idea of cultivating link partners as a means to gain traffic from the click throughs, still has plenty of merit. The general rule to remember is that generally speaking – any link is a good link.
Developing a successful link strategy can take a lot of time and effort. One common mistake is to jump to conclusions too quickly. As Google moves at it’s own pace, anything done to a website today can take a number of days, weeks or months to show up. Much depends upon whether we are talking about new pages or modifications to old established pages.
Often search results will move from being top 10 to nowhere and perhaps back again. New pages are particularly volatile. This is because Google recognises that new pages will have little by the way press release template microsoft to them and so effectively grants a pass. After approximately 30 – 40 days Google checks to see if any links have been built to the page in question.
Failure to gain any links suggests the page will be relegated to Google’s supplemental listing, while those with links will remain in the main index. Generally it appears that any new page will take up to 90 to 180 days to gain some degree of page rank after first going live.

Quick Lessons In Link Building

In the beginning, it can take some effort getting other sites to link to yours, particularly those inundated with requests.
A key component of link- building is developing relationships. Try to cultivate a relationship by starting a conversation with a prospective link partner before soliciting a link.
Leave a comment on their Web site/blog or engage them through social media sites.
“You need to view link- building the same way you build any other relationship,” she says.
What Do You Think Of Google Chrome?
December 18, 2008 at 1:58 pm | Posted in browser | Leave a CommentTags: google chrome
I switched to Google Chrome full time for two weeks already and I love the super fast and stable browser. The security and stability of its enhanced tabs is amazing.
With Firefox, if you run into trouble with an open tab, you have to shut your entire web browser down and restart it. With Google Chrome, if you have something crash in a tab, each tab is isolated from the others. To correct a crashed tab, or program running in the tab, simply close the tab while preserving the remaining tabs opened up.
The other thing I like about Google Chrome’s tabbed browsing is that you drag a tab out and it will become its own current window. Also, you can drag the entire window back into an existing window and it will then become a tab.
Not all is good though. Google Chrome does not auto discover RSS feeds and that is a huge disadvantage. Blogs and other sites that syndicate their RSS feed using FeedBurner.com doesn’t pose a problem, but that is only if the Browser Friendly options have been set.
The good news is that Google Chrome will soon auto discover RSS feeds much like how the current version of Firefox does. When you download Google Chrome, by default you install the Beta version rather then the Dev version.
Google says that the Beta version involves less updates and more stability. However, if you use the Dev version of Google Chrome, you’ll have to update more often, but you get new features long before the folks using Beta.
A Surprise Romantic Vacation For My Wife
December 17, 2008 at 1:42 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a CommentMy wife and I were married on Christmas Day which is just around the corner and I still remember our honeymoon 20 years ago.
It was arranged by a close friend of ours who is a wedding planner. We jetted off to the Carribean islands, Jamaica, to be exact, and boy, did we have a memorable time. I believe that place has also been home to romantic vacations for other couples.
Though we celebrate our wedding anniversaries yearly, we have not been back to Jamaica since. Twenty years on, I will love to bring her back to relive those wonderful memories. What made Jamaica so special is their rugged mountains, sunkissed beaches, emerald jungles and sky-blue Caribbean waters. The whole island is bustling with natural life and beauty.
The pictures of Jamaica’s legendary beaches may appear out of this world. Once you arrive on the island and see for yourself, you will believe that everything is real… the softness of the sand to the soothing hush of the surf lapping against the shore.
Some of the attractions which cannot be missed are the world-famous Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay, quiet coves of North Coast near Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay, and Negril’s famous 7-mile beach.
Jamaica also boasts one of the richest landscapes in the Caribbean, with waterfalls, springs, rivers, and streams all flowing down from the mountains. Activities like river rafting, waterfall climbing and horseback riding will occupy your time fully.
There is also one secret indulgence I love at jamaica, which my wife wouldn’t approve of. It is to idle the day away in a hammock under a palm tree with no care in the world. Jamaica all inclusive resort caters to my dream very nicely.

For those who have yet to get married, I seriously recommend caribbean weddings to you. You will not regret spending your once-in-a-lifetime moment in such a special place.
The Complete Guide To Google’s Website Optimizer
December 17, 2008 at 1:31 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a CommentWhy is it that some web sites are golden, compelling visitors to buy while similar web sites, perhaps even offering the same products at similar prices, fail to make the grade?
It may be dumb luck on the owner’s part, but a more likely explanation is that the golden site is the result of careful design, testing, tweaking and testing yet again. Testing has grown into a core search marketing activity, but strangely, it’s also an activity that many search marketers either choose to avoid or don’t even consider at all.
And that’s a mistake. Good testing can not only help you get rid of stinker ads and landing pages, it can also help you optimize winning campaigns, improving their conversion rates and making them even more profitable. And testing needn’t be difficult or time-consuming, especially if you have the right tools. One of the best tools for helping you test and refine your search marketing campaigns is Google’s Website Optimizer. Even better, Website Optimizer is a free service.

Planning For My New House
December 17, 2008 at 3:55 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a CommentIn the next few months, I will be selling my old house. I will move to a simpler place, maybe somewhere close to nature. I am in semi-retired mode and this financial crisis has left me disillusioned with city living as the greed is all too apparent.
I know that some of you abhor the thought of living way out in the boondocks where you are “isolated” for miles. The thought of no shopping mall, grocery store, clinic, etc. drives city dwellers into a stae of panic. But there are two sides to every opinion.
Living away from the hubris is heaven to me. For those of you who feel the need for serious solitude, perhaps building your dream home from a set of small log home plans is just the thing you need.
When it comes to living out in the country with nature, a small home is better than a larger one. This way you have less housekeeping to do as well as spend less on heating/air-conditioning. A log home in the snowcapped mountains of Vermont is my ideal getaway. If there are no electricity, just build a fire in the fireplace to heat your home and again, a smaller home is better, else you will need a mega fireplace. So when you are designing your Log Home Plans, keep these considerations in mind.
My wife unfortuntely doesn’t like the idea of a dream log home in the wilderness. She prefers a ranch home, not surprising since she is a true-blue Texas girl. That is why, I am also looking hard at Ranch house plans and bungalow house Plans from House Plans & More.
I may go along with her idea. A cabin cottage style home is also good for vacation purposes. Rather than having to deal with travel reservations and trying to choose a hotel to stay at, we can have our very own home to live in and invite friends over.
If you are like me and want to move into a dream home, I will recommend to seek professional building advice first, lest your dreams become a nightmare.
Yahoo Still Has Major Search Market Share In Japan
December 15, 2008 at 9:47 am | Posted in search engines | Leave a CommentTags: yahoo, Yahoo Search Marketing, comScore, Japan, search market share
comScore has released metrics on search market share in Japan. Overall, in September, Japanese searchers searched 5.9 billion times, with an average of 96 searches per user.
Yahoo is beating Google out in searches, with over 3 billion searches conducted on Yahoo properties. Google properties counted for just under 2.3 billion searches. Yahoo has a 51.2% market share in Japan, while Google has 39% share, while Microsoft has a 1.5% share with 90 million searches.
Japan is the second largest market for searchers in Asia, China leads Japan with 12.7 billion searches for September, compared to Japan’s 5.9 billion searches.
Yahoo Lay Off US Employees
December 13, 2008 at 6:15 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a CommentYahoo has started slashing employees in the US, following through on a promise to cut its workforce by at least 10 per cent.
Yahoo announced plans to dump some 1400 employees after reporting in October that the weak economy had cut deeply into the California Internet pioneer’s third-quarter profits.
Yahoo has been losing ground on the Internet to companies such as Google, MySpace and Facebook and the economic slowdown has hurt the firm particularly hard as advertisers cut back on spending.
Among the supposed contenders is Arun Sarin, recently retired head of British mobile telephone powerhouse Vodafone Group PLC.

Yahoo cutting its fat will benefit shareholders in the long run since they are not agile enough to offer a strong competition to Google.
The financial crisis is affecting everybody. I doubt if anybody will blame Yang since he is stepping down as chief executive anyway. Call it setting the example from the top.
The incoming CEO is likely to be a turn-around guy. These guys are notorious for trimming companies to their core to get them growing again or package for sale.’
